Therapeutic Effects of Cannabidiol

Although tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) is the most well known compound in marijuana, responsible for the feeling of euphoria or “high,” medical marijuana does not provide relief by THC alone. Dozens of organic compounds known as cannabinoids work together to deliver a wealth of medical benefits. THC’s first mate, cannabidiol (CBD), is a substance with massive medical potential.

Through its interactions with the body, cannabidiol has a myriad of health benefits, which include analgesic (1), anti-inflammatory (2), anti-nausea (3), anti-epileptic (4), anti-proliferative (5), anti-bacterial (6), and anti-dystonic effects (7).  In addition, the presence of CBD alongside THC can serve to counter or delay certain effects of the latter. For instance, CBD helps to calm potential anxiety that users of marijuana may experience after a dose of THC, and CBD is also capable of slowing the effects of THC to provide relief for longer periods of time (8).

No single compound in medical marijuana is capable of providing a complete set of medical advantages on its own, but the control that cultivators maintain over the cannabinoid content of the variety of strains that they grow allows patients to seek a balance of effects that most benefits each individual. CBD and THC have shown to be reliable teammates that work together to maximize the potential for wellness.
